In global terms, tobacco is considered to be the most widely grown non-food crop,

although it accounts for only 0.3% of cultivated land (but over 1% in China). This

compares to 13% for grain, 2% for cotton, and 0.7% for coffee. About 87% of the

tobacco crop ends up in cigarettes.

A 1986 report estimated that tobacco usurps the place of food crops and uses land

that could otherwise grow food to feed 10 to 20 million people.
