Common Cause reports that tobacco interests gave more than $3 million in

unregulated soft money to the national parties in 1997, 82% to Republicans. Philip

Morris gave $1.9 million in soft money to the Republican Party, and $243,000 to the

Democrats.

The National Republican Congressional Committee gave $60,000 to U.S. Tobacco in

February 1998 for the use of its corporate jets for trips by House speaker Newt

Gingrich and other Republican leaders for fundraising purposes. In 1997, Senate

Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS) and House Majority whip Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX)

were among politicians who received rides from R.J. Reynolds.

Tobacco companies provided their corporate jets to Republican legislators on 32

dates between January 1997 and May 1998 for as many as 84 flights. There were no

reports of Democrats travelling on tobacco jets in the same time period. Lawmakers

must reimburse the owners of the private jets the equivalent of first class commercial

airfare to the same destination. The National Republican Congressional Committee

paid tobacco companies $190,000 for travel in this period, making it the "biggest

single recipient of subsidized travel from the tobacco industry." The Republican

committee chair said that he sees "nothing wrong" with the travel.
