"Cigarette manufacturers have spelled out in full-page advertisements, and through

their lobbying organizations in Washington, such as the ACLU and the Tobacco

Institute, how a 'bureaucracy run wild' is preparing to prohibit smoking and abolish

cigarettes. What will be next, goes the cigarette company line, a new prohibition on

alcohol? Caffeine? Fatty foods? Sweets and candy? In fact the FDA already regulates

candy, caffeine and fatty foods under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.

Traditionally, cigarettes have not been subject to even the same scrutiny as a cup of

coffee."

"In at least one instance, Philip Morris's in-house advertising and graphic art

department designed, wrote copy for, produced and sent out an entire direct-mail

campaign concerning smokers' rights that used the ACLU name and logo."

Lew Maltby is director of the ACLU's Workplace Rights Project. In 1992, he traveled

to Copenhagen at the expense of the Tobacco Institute to address a conference on

smoking restrictions, and in his speech stated "many of the claims made about the

health effects of smoking are exaggerated."

The Hooters 500 auto race in November 1993 at the Atlanta Motor speedway was

one of the Winston Cup NASCAR series, and was attended by 100,000 people, the

largest sporting event in Georgia. This series includes 30 races in 14 states each

year. The Skoal trailer had a sign that read, "Keep Government Out of Racing

Sponsorships...WARNING LABELS DO NOT BELONG ON RACE CARS."
