The Canadian government is studying plans to require plain packaging for all tobacco

products sold there. US lobbyists argue that this would violate the free trade

agreements that Canada has signed with the US. Lawyers for RJ Reynolds and Philip

Morris swarmed into Ottawa and were compared by some critics to the soft-spoken,

well-dressed characters from "The Godfather" movie.

After Lawrence and Preston Tisch of P. Lorillard Tobacco Company and Loews Corp.

gave $30 million to New York University, its hospital was renamed for them. Larry

White wrote for Newsday that it was "unique in the history of medical philanthropy that

donors gave not only the hospital, but the patients as well." And thoracic surgeon

William Cahan wrote in the Daily News: "Naming a hospital after tobacco men is just

too ironic. Around town, the University Hospital is becoming known as Lorillard

General."

In November 1983, Newsweek ran a 16-page special health supplement written by the

American Medical Association. The section of the manuscript dealing with tobacco

and nicotine addiction was deleted. That issue of Newsweek had 12 full-page

cigarette ads.
