| | The National Smokers Alliance, a tax-exempt, nonprofit group, is helping to arrange |
| | coalitions to try to repeal the California ban on smoking in bars. The alliance received |
| | more than $42 million from the tobacco industry between 1993 and 1996. One of the |
| | world's largest public relations firms, Burson-Marsteller, which has long had close ties |
| | to the tobacco industry, has guided an intensive legislative lobbying effort in |
| | California, and received more than $4.4 million from the National Smokers Alliance |
| | between 1993 and 1996, the last year for which financial statements are available. |
