Tobacco and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) The American Civil Liberties

Union (ACLU) has been lobbying since 1986 against restrictions on cigarette

advertising on the grounds that it would violate the First Amendment. Since that time,

it has received more than half a million dollars in contributions from Philip Morris, and

more from other tobacco companies.

The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) has a longstanding financial relationship

with the tobacco industry, stalling federal legislation limiting tobacco advertising and

promotion to children, and lobbying against legislation limiting smoking in restaurants,

workplaces, and other indoor areas.

SCARC, August 25, 1993

In Pennsylvania, the legislative director of the state ACLU chapter testified against a

bill prohibiting smoking in cars carrying children. In New Jersey, the ACLU director

reportedly traveled in the same caravan with tobacco industry representatives to radio

stations and press events in support of a smokers' rights bill.

"The ACLU's clients have always been the long line of individuals whose basic rights

were threatened by oppressive government action. How did Philip Morris and RJ

Reynolds jump to the front of that line?"

SCARC, August 25, 1993

"How could anyone seriously believe that advertising of harmful products is protected
