| | For a member of the Mississippi legislature, Charlie Williams gets around. In the past |
| | two years, Mr. Williams has gone to Spain, Belgium, Australia, and Costa Rica, all |
| | courtesy of the New York Society for International Affairs. The non-profit society |
| | receives almost all of its funding from Philip Morris, and recruits its trip-goers through |
| | two political organizations, the National Governors Association and the Council of |
| | State Governments. Its president, Andrew Whist, has worked for Philip Morris since |
| | 1966, and serves as senior vice president for external affairs, advising the company |
| | on international trade issues. Back in Mississippi, Charlie Williams commented, |
| | "More people die of fat each year than from tobacco." |

| | Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson "took trips to England, Australia, and |
| | Southern Africa that were paid for by innocent-sounding foundations such as the New |
| | York Society for International Affairs, which turned out to be largely funded by Philip |
| | Morris. Not coincidentally, Philip Morris executives accompanied Thompson on these |
| | trips." |
