"...what the tobacco industry is attempting to do is to distort what is being proposed by

the FDA, turning it into a big-government-is-taking-away-your-rights, slippery-slope

argument: tobacco today, what next tomorrow?"

Will the measures under consideration affect jobs related to legal tobacco sales? A.

The only measures under consideration are to reduce the illegal sale of tobacco to

children. Should we be concerned about job losses caused by reducing illegal sales

of tobacco to children? A. No. Illegally selling an addictive and lethal product to

children is not an acceptable means to create or sustain jobs. Then why is the tobacco

industry fighting so hard against these measures? A. Studies show that 89 percent of

all smokers begin as children or teenagers. The long-term profitability of the tobacco

industry depends on several thousand children becoming addicted to cigarettes every

day. The tobacco industry has opposed every meaningful proposal to reduce

tobacco use by children.

"To those who produce and market cigarettes, I say today: Take responsibility for

your actions, sell your products only to adults, draw the line on children, show by your

deeds as well as your words that you recognize that it is wrong as well as illegal to

hook one million children a year on tobacco...We must act now before another

generation of Americans is condemned to fight a difficult and grueling personal battle

with an addiction that will cost millions of them their lives."

President Bill Clinton, August 10, 1995

"...the industry may be able to tie up President Clinton's tobacco proposals in the

courts until the President is safely tucked up in his retirement home."
