Tobacco manufacturers spend about $1.75 per pound for tobacco; there are 5 1/2

ounces of tobacco in each carton of cigarettes. Of each dollar that the consumer

spends on cigarettes, only 3 cents goes to the tobacco farmer. 16 cents is spent on

advertising and promotion, and 25 cents on packaging and shipping. It costs just 11

cents of each dollar to actually manufacture the cigarettes.

For each dollar spent on cigarettes, only 3 cents in 1991 went to the tobacco grower,

down from 13 cents in 1950. The manufacturer's share in the same time interval

increased from 21 cents to 50 cents.

Most developing countries are net importers of tobacco, for which they spend scarce

foreign exchange. In countries producing tobacco, land cultivated for this purpose

denies rich farmland for food production, and food often has to be imported. Tobacco

growing also depletes soil nutrients at a much faster rate than many other crops, thus

decreasing the life of the soil.
