Smoke-free worksite policies help employees to reduce or discontinue use of

tobacco. In a study of 8,300 smokers in 22 cities in the United States and Canada,

employees who worked in a smoke-free worksite were over 25% more likely to make

a serious quit attempt, and over 25% more likely to achieve cessation than those who

worked where smoking was permitted. Among continuing smokers, employees in

smoke-free worksites consumed an average of three fewer cigarettes per day

compared with those who worked in areas with non-restrictive smoking policies.

When people cannot smoke at work, their daily consumption falls by up to 25%, a level

unprecedented by any other intervention, and smoking cessation is also prompted by

workplace bans.

All indoor smoking was banned in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1993.

The main public health impact of restrictions or bans on smoking in the workplace,

reductions in smoking among smokers, should lead to reductions in tobacco-induced

disease in smokers to a far greater degree than any health benefits for nonsmokers.

In a survey of one nonsmoking workplace, the average smoker reduced consumption

by 5.18 cigarettes a day. Light smokers did not change consumption, while moderate

smokers reduced by an average of 5.8 cigarettes per day, and heavy smokers by 7.9

cigarettes.
