Two studies by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the nonprofit

American Legacy Foundation document that cigarette makers have increased their

advertising in magazines with large readerships by teenagers since 1998, when they

agreed in a court settlement not to target teens in their ads. In the first 9 months of

1999, the industry spent $119.9 million on cigarette ads in magazines with a

significant percentage of teen readers such as Rolling Stone, Glamour, Motor Trend

and Sports Illustrated.

Charles Southwood, owner and founder of Death Tobacco Company, sold more than

75,000 cartons of Death Cigarettes in his first year of operation. He has 100 park

benches in the Los Angeles area with his ads that say "Don't Smoke Death

Cigarettes." The popular new brand is sold as a novelty item in Southern California for

$3 a pack. They come in a black box with a large white skull and crossbones under

the brand name DEATH. Southwood has also introduced a menthol brand packaged

in a green box and called GREEN DEATH.
