| | In 1994 there were 134,100 cigarette-caused residential fires in the United States, |
| | causing $446 million in property damage, 909 deaths, and 3,000 serious injuries. |
| | 39% of those killed in these fires were not the smokers themselves. The tobacco |
| | industry gives millions of dollars each year to fire departments and fire safety |
| | organizations; the result has been that these organizations have not been aggressive |
| | in promoting fire-safe cigarettes. |
