| | from the New World. Modern tobaccos are the species nicotiana tabacam, which was |
| | not grown north of Mexico until the English colonists introduced it into Virginia. A |
| | hardier species, nicotiana rustica, was grown by the tribes of the eastern United |
| | States and Canada. |
