"Hopefully, not long after the beginning of the 21st century, the ashtray will be viewed

in much the same light we now view the spittoon - as an item for antique collectors -

inviting curiosity by those whose only know- ledge of smoking comes from reading

history books and seeing old movies."

Donald Shopland (Seminars in Oncology, August 1990, p. 411)

so bad that dogs won't bite you If you smoke enough you will cough even in your sleep

and this will deter bank robbers who will think you are awake."

The Minnesota Department of Health has launched an ad campaign rapping the

tobacco industry for using images of glamour and success. One shows two male ad

executives admiring a billboard of a slim, sexy woman smoking a cigarette. One

proclaims "Woman will love it." The woman on the billboard comes to life and snuffs

out her cigarette on his head. Another billboard shows three women smoking and the

slogan: "Women are making the rush to rich flavor." As some of the panels peel off the

billboard, the message changes to say: "Woman are making us rich."
