In a study of 7680 children ages 2 months through 5 years of age, 38% were presently

exposed to ETS in the home, and 23.8% were exposed by maternal smoking during

pregnancy. The increased risk in children 2 months to 2 years old in homes with ETS

for three or more episodes of wheezing was 2.7-fold, and for a diagnosis of asthma in

children 2 months to 5 years old was 2.1 times the risk compared to homes without

ETS. Overall, in the babies and younger children, 40% to 60% of the cases of asthma

and three or more episodes of wheezing were attributable to ETS exposure, and for

diagnosed asthma, there were an estimated 133,800 to 161,600 excess cases from

ETS.

In a study of 4000 children ages 5 to 7 in England and Wales, 53% were exposed to

Of the estimated 54.1 million US children under age 15, 21.1 million (39%) are

exposed to environmental tobacco smoke in the home. In children in households with

less than $20,000 income, ETS exposure was reported in 51%. ETS exposure was

associated with 24% more hospitalization days and 43% more lost school days.
