Environmental tobacco smoke: SIDS and ETS Exposure

globalink (artefact pour saut de ligne)

Smoking during pregnancy triples the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

Maternal smoking is responsible for 35% of all SIDS deaths in the US, and 66% of

SIDS deaths among the infants of women who smoked during their pregnancy. In all,

an estimated 1900 SIDS deaths are caused by maternal smoking in the US each

year.

SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is the most common cause of death of infants

between one month and one year of age, and accounts for about 50% of deaths of

infants between two and four months of age. In a study from San Diego,

breast-feeding was protective for SIDS among nonsmokers (overall adjusted odds

ratio 0.37) but not smokers (odds ratio 1.38).

JAMA, March 8, 1995, p. 795

Smoking is one of the most important preventable risk factors for SIDS; adjusted

odds ratios range from 1.6 to 2.5 times increased risk for mothers who smoked 1 to 9

cigarettes per day during pregnancy (compared with nonsmokers) and from 2.3 to

3.8 for mothers who smoked 10 or more cigarettes per day during pregnancy.

Infants of smoking smothers are three times more likely to die of sudden infant death

syndrome (SIDS) than infants not exposed to smoke. SIDS is the number one cause

of death in infants between one month and one year of age, and accounts for about

50% of deaths of infants between two and four months of age.
