| | The five-year survival rate for oral cancer has improved little in the last four decades, |
| | holding steady at about 53%. Only 34% of blacks survived for five years after initial |
| | diagnosis, compared with 55% of whites. |

| | Estimated new cases of cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx in the United States in |
| | 1998 are 30,300, with 8,000 deaths. For cancer of the larynx, estimates are 11,100 |
| | cases and 4300 deaths. Five-year cancer survival rates (1986-1993) for cancer of the |
| | oral cavity are 55% for whites and 34% for African Americans, and for laryngeal |
| | cancer, 69% and 54%, respectively. |
