Adenomatous polyps are precursors of colon and rectal cancer. Current smokers

increase their risk for developing these polyps by 2.6 fold. For smokers who drink as

well, the excess risk is 4.2 times.

The risk of anal cancer is high among premenopausal women who smoke (odds ratio

5.6), but not in men or older women. "We hypothesize an antiestrogenic mechanism of

action for smoking in anal carcinogenesis."

Journal of the National Cancer Institute, April 21, 1999, p. 708

In a study of patients with anal cancer, 55% were smokers compared to 21% of

control subjects. The relative risk was 7- to 9-fold. A heavy smoker also has 77 times

the risk of oral cancer compared to a nonsmoker.

Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, May 1996, p. 722

Smokers appear to have a modest increase in their risk of stomach cancer, about 50

percent over the risk of nonsmokers. If this association is casual, then at least one-fifth

of stomach cancer would be attributable to smoking.
