Cancer death rates would have declined over the last three decades in the United

States were it not for an increase in lung cancer and other cancers related to smoking.

Cigarette smoking contributed to 157,000 of the 514,000 total cancer deaths in the

United States in 1991. Smoking directly contributes to 22% of all cancer deaths in

women and 45% of all cancer deaths in men. Lung cancer has displaced coronary

heart disease as the single leading cause of excess mortality among smokers.
