Target: President of The United States

Context:
President Bush has taken over $130,000 this election term from the tobacco industry. His track record on tobacco control is disgraceful, we urge him to give significant proof to whether or not he's accepting bribes in the form of campaign contributions.

  • Dear President Bush:

Subject: New York Youth are taking aim at your ties with the Tobacco Industry, Our Campaign for the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control has thousands of voters aware of your administrations policies on tobacco control and the inaction of yourself and your administration on this global epidemic that kills nearly 5 million people yearly worldwide.

This letter along with many others is part of the Youth Led Campaign to Shake Things Up by Ignite New York. Ignite New York is a youth advocacy and empowerment movement that is made up of New Yorkers aged 13 to 24. Ignite New York is holding the Tobacco Industry accountable at every level by directing public officials to act responsibly.
I as a United States Citizen have been made aware of the over $130,000 that the Tobacco Industry has given your reelection campaign in hopes of continuing your inaction on tobacco prevention, control and regulation.
I have also been apprised of the world's first global health treaty, known as the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which was adopted by the World Health Assembly on May 21, 2003. This treaty will place strict limitations on how the tobacco industry operates globally and WILL save millions of lives.

The Tobacco Industry makes a product that kills nearly 5 million people on a yearly basis, as an American, I will not stand idly by while your inaction places future generations at risk.

AS A CITIZEN OF THIS GREAT NATION I URGE YOU TO DO EVERYTHING IN YOUR POWER TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR ADMINISTRATION SIGNS THE FRAMEWORK CONVENTION ON TOBACCO CONTROL, SO THAT IT MAY GO BEFORE THE UNITED STATES SENATE TO BE RATIFIED.

    Respectfully,
