Youth sponsored petition to urge Bush Administration to Submit FCTC for Senate Ratification

Target: President of The United States

Context:
By signing the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, President Bush and Secretary of Health and Human Services have done little but execute a symbolic act. By not submitting the FCTC to the US Senate for ratification, The Bush administration is placing millions into the same seat of jeapordy. Signing the FCTC was a Public Relations maneuver that mocks international health and nations who are truly committed to protecting the health of their citizens.

Every day that the treaty languishes over 13,000 people around the world die of tobacco related diseases.

Talking points:
-The FCTC has comprehensive power to stop tobacco promotion to kids
-The FCTC requires strict control over the marketing practices of the Tobacco Industry, including comprehensive restrictions on advertising, marketing and sponsorship.
-The FCTC excludes the Tobacco Industry in government policy making (no more campaign contributions to you Mr. Bush or to you either Mr. Thompson)
-The FCTC requires that each person of the public be given adequate information on the dangers of tobacco. (This is especially necessary in other countries, where the Tobacco Industry conceals the dangers of their products use.)

FACT: The Tobacco Industry is using its every power to halt the FCTC in its tracks.

FACT: The Tobacco Industry makes a product that kills nearly
5 million people each year.

FACT: President Bush has Received millions of dollars form the tobacco industry.

FACT: Secretary of Health and Human services, Tommy Thompson accepted thousands of dollars from the tobacco industry while he was governor of Wisconsin.

Signing the FCTC with no intention to ratify has no effect but a public relations maneuver.

Every day this treaty languishes over 13,000 people around the world die of tobacco related diseases.
