Context:
The Thailand Health Promotion Institute is spearheading a campaign to eliminate point of sale tobacco advertising and promotion. The campaign has the support of Thailand's Minister of Health, who recently announced that point of sale advertising would be banned as of September 24, 2005. However, Thai tobacco control advocates are concerned that Philip Morris, which has aggressively fought the measure, will try to thwart the ban before it goes into effect. Letters of strong support from around the world are needed!

Prof. Dr. Suchai Charoenrattanakul Minister of Public Health Thailand Dear Minister, I would like to commend you for recently announcing a ban on point of sale tobacco advertising and promotions, effective September 24, 2005. As you are well aware, point of sale advertising is one of the primary means by which tobacco companies like Philip Morris market their lethal products around the world. In Thailand, such advertising has been against the law since 1992, but not explicitly banned. Thus, it very good news that this loophole will soon be closed. The prohibition on point of sale tobacco advertising, for which there is strong public support, is an important step toward addressing the problem of increased smoking rates among Thai youth. In particular, you deserve credit for withstanding pressure from Philip Morris, the world's largest multinational tobacco company, which aggressively lobbied against the prohibition of this form of tobacco advertising. Philip Morris's strong opposition to the regulation is a sure sign that it is an effective measure that will hinder the company's efforts to recruit "replacement smokers" and increase its profits from selling death. The company will no doubt try to thwart the regulation before it comes into effect, but the international tobacco control community has confidence in your integrity and commitment to public health. We trust that you will remain steadfast in your support for banning point of sale tobacco advertising, so that on September 24 the world can celebrate Thailand's global leadership in the area of tobacco control yet again.
