(Medical Association letter heading) World No Tobacco Day 2005 Health Professionals and Tobacco Dear xxx (please insert title as appropriate), Tobacco kills more than 650,000 people each year in the European Union and smoking remains the largest single cause of preventable death and disease in the developed countries. On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day (31 May 2005), health professional organizations wish to urge you to take the following action: 1. increase accessibility to smoking cessation treatment for smokers (including the training of health professionals and the development of a national network of smoking cessation treatment services) as well as improving accessibility to nicotine-replacement therapies and removing inequalities in the provision of these services; 2. successfully implement and enforce the most stringent measures within the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in order to protect public health; 3. take the required action to fully protect non-smokers from the detrimental effects of tobacco smoke, because tobacco smoke is a toxic, carcinogenic mutagen and also a repro-toxic substance. The xxxx (country) Coalition for Smoking Prevention comprising xxx (number) member organisations and medical associations committed to reducing death and disability as the result of tobacco use, demand that the government enacts tough policies to address tobacco abuse with the aim of protecting all European citizens from a lifetime of preventable addiction and disease. Yours faithfully, Health Professional Organisation xx Name of Signatory Number of Members Signature
