| | If current worldwide smoking patterns persist, about half a billion of the world's |
| | population alive today will be eventually killed by tobacco, including one quarter billion |
| | still in middle age (35-69) who will each lose about 20 years of life. |

| | Among a population of women who smoke regularly, tobacco will be a cause of at |
| | least half, and perhaps substantially more than half, of all their deaths in middle age. |

| | One in four deaths in men in developed countries is attributable to smoking. Smoking |
| | now causes about a third of all male deaths in middle age, and on average, those |
| | killed by tobacco in this age group (35 to 69 years) lose more than 20 years of life |
| | expectancy. Smoking is the cause of about half of all male deaths from cancer in |
| | middle age, and about a third of cancers and fifth of deaths of those in old age (70 or |
| | older). |

| | Every cigarette smoked takes 7 minutes off the life of the smoker, about as long as it |
| | takes to smoke the cigarette. Each pack of 20 cigarettes takes 140 minutes to |
| | smoke, and subtracts 140 minutes from the life of the smoker. |

| | The annual number of female deaths in the US attributable to smoking was 14,000 in |
| | 1965. In 1995, it will be 240,000, or half of the total number of female deaths from |
| | smoking in the entire developed world. The United States has only 5% of the female |
| | population of the world, but in the decade of the 1990s, it will have 50% of the deaths |
| | from tobacco in the world among women. |
